after christmas
2005-12-26 - 8:50 p.m.
Usually for some reason when Christmas ends, I get very reflective. I don't know why- some people do it on their birthdays, some people on New Years, some people never. But Christmas does it to me. I don't know why. This year it wasn't as bad, mainly I guess because I had a lot to do Christmas night. But usually Christmas night, after all the celebrating and excitememnt is over, I lay in bed and kan't go to sleep because I'm thinking and reflecting on the day, the year, etc. etc. I think Christmas, for me, is more the end ov the year than New Years. I don't know why. But one thing about this year- it didn't feel like Christmas. A lot ov people have said they agree with me when I tell them this. It was Christmas Eve and it was like it had snuck up on me. Then it was over.
I was busy all weekend. I still had a decent amount ov Christmas shopping to do going into Christmas Eve. I went to Sound Exchange, and saw a couple ov people there I know. Beau was working, and I had the new issue ov MRR that reviewed his band Insect Warfare's new 7"ep, so I showed him that. It was a pretty good review, so he was happy. I went to Nan's and bought a Beatles cookie jar for my Mom from them. That is the greatest comic/game/hobby store I've ever been to. I love going there. It is completely full and spilling over with anything and everything you could want in the line ov comics, magazines, toys, games, etc. After that I went to Half Price Books, and found the first Uphill Battle cd for 99 cents, and a funny book by Richard Roeper (ov Ebert and Roeper fame) for $1.99. Then I went looking for some place to eat, but everything was closing. Finally I found Bennigans, which was open until 10. Then I came home and called Krystal, and opened her present to me. She got me a gargoyle statue/ fountain (I love fountains- I have 4 now. They're all little, but I still like them). She also got me a Corpse Bride shirt, a zombie game, and a Halloween book.
Christmas I went over to my Mom's and she gave me a dvd/ video player. She said she had another something that was coming in the mail for me but it hadn't come yet. I did an order with Interpunk as a Christmas gift for myself. Here's what I ordered:
...And The Saga Continues -Ferocious 7"ep
Beginning Of The End -Sci-Fi Monster Violence 7"ep
Die Young/7 Generations -Split 7"ep
Kill Crush Destroy -Weaker We Get... CD
Last Priest -We All Failed CD
Stormcrow -Enslaved In Darkness CD
It's supposed to be here this week.
I did a ton ov Christmas shows this year. At all the radio stations. All the classics were played, and then some. By the way, I post all my playlists at www.myspace.com/deadthyme. I don't write anything personal or do anything there except post my playlkists and radio show info, but if you want to see what I do at my main radio show, that's a good place to keep up with it. I'm working on a website (well, mostly Krystal putting it together, but I'm putting all the info in), hopefully that'll be done early next year.
Today I worked some, and went and ate, and then since traffic was so bad I went to the mall to kill time. I looked at that new Calvin & Hobbes box set, which they had open. I read the intro (I know all the strips by heart). Some day I'm going to buy it.
I did go back and see "King Kong" again. Why, you ask, since I thought it was so stupid? Because I couldn't believe my own senses. Just like with "Lord Of the Rings: The Two Towers" and "Star Wars Episode III: The Revenge of the Sith", when everyone else says something is great, and it's done by a good director and should be great, I begin to doubt my own reliability and go see it again. And each time (in the three above cited cases), I was pretty much right the first time (tho each time I did like the movie slightly better than the first time). "King Kong" had so many stupid scenes, it kind ov messed it up for me. And I'm not a nit picker- all ov my most favorite movies could be nit picked to death, easily (one ov my most fav movies- "Sleepy Hollow", has several gigantic plot holes. I still love it). It's just that there was sooo much ridiculous stuff, from stupid characters to stupid dinosaurs to stupid physics to stupid gigantic plot holes. Pretty much no person or animal in the movie acts like any person or animal would realistically act, except for Kong himself, who was awesome. That was one great thing about the movie- Kong himself. He was excellent. Naomi Watts also surprised me by being really good- generally, I've always considered her pretty bland, but she was excellent in this. All the acting was good. It just had too much stupid shit in it. Which is too bad. What's really annoying is that all these big critics who always bitch about horror movies being stupid and all the characters acting dumb and never doing what any real person would do are hailing this is being such a great movie, just because it's a big budget movie done by an Academy Award winner. Probably everyone who wants to see it have seen it already anyway.
I guess that's about all I have to say right now. Hope everyone had a great Christmas...
